The exhibition Josef Hoffmann and the Poldi Phenomenon is devoted to the “Poldihaus” in Kladno (Czech Republic), designed by Josef Hoffmann and built in 1903 as a guesthouse for visitors to Karl Wittgenstein’s steelworks, the “Poldi-Hütte.” The exhibition also provides an insight into Josef Hoffmann’s furniture designs.

Josef Hoffmann Museum Brtnice
Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was one of the most important architects and designers of the first half of the 20th century. After 1989, his birthplace in Brtnice was converted into a museum, since January 2006 administered jointly by the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the MAK, Vienna. The museum’s exhibitions focus on Hoffmann’s work and its inspirational influence on artists of today.

The current exhibition focuses on the cooperative partnership between Hoffmann and the Kladno steel magnate Karl Wittgenstein (1847–1913), to include the history of the unremarkable “Poldihaus,” built in 1903 to accommodate important visitors to the “Poldi-Hütte”—the steelworks run by Wittgenstein. The name “Poldi” is the affectionate form of his wife’s given name Leopoldine. Selected pieces of Hoffmann’s furniture are also on display, whose simplicity, geometric forms, and ageless design put them ahead of their time. The furniture is displayed in its unrenovated state, thus not only emphasizing its aesthetic value but also reflecting the dramatic events of the 20th century.
