Klimt and the Wiener Werkstätte
On this guided tour we take a close look at one of our collection’s highlights: Gustav Klimt’s meter-long cartoons for his mosaic frieze in the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. The mosaic’s elaborate creation with its world-famous motif of the embrace is wonderfully narrated in this exclusive guided tour. In addition, you will learn more about the Stoclets, their love of art and their demanding lifestyle, not to mention the radical idea of the total work of art.

Design in Times of Climate Crisis: Pathways to Contemporary Design
There is much more to design than just shaping products: design is a state of mind, a way of bringing about change, of making new solutions both imaginable and possible. As a reaction to the ubiquitous impact of the climate catastrophe, contemporary design pursues innovative solutions and new ways of thinking. In this tour we present new materials and connections and explain design cycles and future-oriented scenarios. For we all share in designing the future of our world. This exclusive tour takes us along pathways that lead to contemporary design, through the extensive rooms of the MAK Design Lab. Here we present innovative projects by contemporary designers and artists who react to the challenges of the 21st century and inspire and describe change.

Booklet with Style
With artists from MAK Art Education department
In this workshop, you can learn about different bookbinding materials, tools, and artistic techniques: choose between the somewhat simpler saddle stitching and Japanese binding. In either case, the focus is on the successful combination of thread and paper. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to design your booklets individually with stamps based on patterns by designers from the Wiener Werkstätte such as Felice Rix, Dagobert Peche, or Josef Hoffmann. You can also embellish your notebooks with special patterned paper.

Tailoring for Change
Conceived by artist Anna Schwarz, the HBLA Herbststraße and the MAK
This workshop is all about sustainable design strategies for clothing and fashion. What tricks and solutions can be tried out for the sustainable and creative use of textiles? To begin with, your wardrobe will be scrutinized: present your favorite pieces and bring along anything you want to swap! You’ll collaborate on developing an anti-fast-fashion collection and crafting small, practical accessories that go with it, all in a creative atmosphere.

The Archive of Blossoms
A paper flower workshop designed by the mischer’traxler design studio with the kind support of Swarovski Kristallwelten
To mark the double anniversary of 130 years of Swarovski and 160 years since the opening of the MAK, mischer’traxler studio has developed the Archive of Blossoms. This is an installation of over-large, hand-folded paper flowers based on historical floral motifs from the MAK collection. With crystalline details adding a special sparkle, this work impressively combines art, design, and exquisite craftsmanship. Designs by Dagobert Peche, the great visionary and “enfant terrible” of the Wiener Werkstätte, also feature in the Archive of Blossoms. You have the chance in this workshop to fold your own gorgeous flowers and adorn them with Swarovski crystals. Whether you use them to congratulate yourself or someone else is entirely up to you.

MAK Design Teambuilding: Following New Patterns!
Meet with designers at an exclusive team building workshop
Choose from two possible options:
- UNlearn together
- Design your Detox
In our workshops, you discover design as a creative tool together. You learn to ask new questions, open perspectives, and question your own habits, learned patterns, and systems of daily coexistence. Design is understood as thinking in a broader sense and as a practice connecting visionary ideas with pragmatic solutions.
We offer a short insight into the Permanent Collection and the MAK Design Lab, and afterwards guide small teams through a creative workshop where you not only approach the concept of design in a new way but also perceive and get to know both the MAK and possibly your team members from a new and personal perspective.
Try yourself at co-creative, design-based thinking and find each other in the common invention of everyday solutions–be it object, service, or intervention. Work according to and within new patterns in the extraordinary atmosphere of the MAK.
