Textile creation is one of the world’s oldest cultural techniques. And since Anni Albers and Gottfried Semper, the craft has also been considered within the discourse of art history. A key focus of art theorist Rike Frank’s work is textiles in contemporary fine art. Together with Bärbel Vischer—curator of the exhibition HARD/SOFT—the art expert looks at Dorothea Tanning’s installation Chambre 202, Hôtel du Pavot (1970), a surrealist setting in which bodies and fetishes grow out of the furniture, walls, and fireplace. The pair also discuss Magdalena Abakanowicz’s spectacular, monumental pieces made from natural materials such as sisal, flax, and horsehair.
